Day 9: Cape Cod

The regular season finale usually gives way to plenty more baseball in Cotuit, but not this year. After shaking off their slow start, the Kettleers kept playing well but couldn’t quite keep pace. Their last-ditch efforts to qualify for the postseason were dashed yesterday.

Everyone wants to win – especially fans of a franchise that has done a lot of it – but the beach chairs and blankets are here today. The lines at the concession stand are long. The bleachers are almost full. Cotuit loves a winner, but loves its Kettleers – regardless of their record – most of all.

With the ending now defined, the day is a chance to reflect. Ross Achter had the best summer of his life. David Gerics hopes scouts saw something they liked. Colton Hock can’t believe it went by so fast.

It was not a memorable summer for the Kettleers, not one for the record books.

But the boys in maroon won’t forget it.
